Mirpur legal fraternity, district administration resolve to probe into July 28 Mirpur firing incident;

MIRPUR: An important joint meeting, in camera, of District Bar Association Mirpur and the district administration,  held at the Bar Room here on Monday, unanimously called  for a transparent inquiry into the tregic July 28 alleged cross  firing incident between police  and a demonstrating mob in Mirpur-AJK.

Commissioner Mirpur Division Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan, Deputy Inspector General of Police Mirpur Kamran Ali, Deputy Commissioner Mirpur Chaudhry Sajid Aslam and Senior Superintendent of Police Mirpur Khurram Iqbal attended the meeting.

District Bar Association President Babar Khan Advocate and other members of the legal fraternity also participated.

Speaking at the meeting, Advocate Babar Ali Khan expressed reservations over certain actions taken by the Mirpur administration and strongly condemned the July 28 incident. He demanded that the matter be investigated immediately and transparently by a senior police officer.

The lawyers also voiced serious concerns over the suspension of internet services in Mirpur and called for restoration of communication facilities for citizens.

Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan assured the District Bar Association that an inquiry into the July 28 incident would be conducted by a senior police officer. He further assured the lawyers that the association would be provided an opportunity to extend full cooperation during the inquiry.

The commissioner also said that immediate contact would be made with the relevant authorities to seek restoration of internet services in Mirpur.

The district administration further assured the participants that the police would, to the extent possible, avoid violent actions in future and that the District Bar Association would be taken into confidence on important matters.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain coordination and consultation and to work for the supremacy of law and resolution of issues faced by citizens.
