Kotli: The situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir has become highly tense following a violent confrontation between activists of the Awami Action Committee and law enforcement agencies during the protest long march on 9 June in Kotli.

According to various sources, at least 7 people were killed and dozens injured in clashes and firing incidents; however, official confirmation of these figures has not yet been issued by authorities.

Sources said that following the long march call, large protest convoys from Khoi Ratta, Chawroi, Nikyal, Dhanah and other areas moved towards Kotli, while gatherings had also started in different parts of the city since early morning.

Tensions escalated when a convoy from Khoi Ratta reached near Kotli University, where protesters came face to face with security forces. The situation reportedly worsened near the bypass road, where firing incidents occurred, resulting in multiple injuries. The wounded were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

Some local sources also claimed that tensions continued around the hospital area with further firing incidents, though these reports have not been independently verified. It is further alleged that some of the injured later succumbed to their wounds.

According to reports, a young doctor named Dr. Ahsan, who was present on the rooftop of his house near the bypass road, was also killed in the firing. Other reported casualties include a woman identified as Arusa Waqalat at DHQ Hospital, Muhammad Akhtar, Chaudhry Ihtisham Shahpal, Goga Bhai, and a UK-returned individual from Pang Piran.

Following reports of deaths and injuries, unrest reportedly spread further in Kotli, with protests expanding across several areas. Additional contingents of Rangers, Frontier Constabulary, police, and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed across the city, with security tightened around major roads, government buildings, and sensitive locations.

Meanwhile, political, social, and civil society groups have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further confrontation. Observers say the situation remains highly sensitive and stressed the need for transparent investigations and a constitutional, legal, and negotiated resolution to prevent further loss of life.
