MIRPUR:  Mirpur District Bar Association  President Barrister Ali Khan on Friday  welcomed resolutions passed by the “Legislarive Assembly”  in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) calling for restoration of the territory’s statehood, saying the move reflects the aspirations of the people of Jamnu & Kashmir and their demand for recognition of their political identity being the subjects of the Himalayan State
In a statement, he said the resolutions demonstrated that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were unwilling to compromise on their identity and political status. He said that Delhi-sponsored forced unilateral measures of August 5, 2019, which revoked the territory’s special  status, had created a sense of insecurity, deprivation and uncertainty among the Kashmiri people.
He said the demand for restoration of statehood by the reported state assembly was evidence that the people of Kashmir wanted to participate in decisions concerning their future and sought restoration of the territory’s  historical status.
Baber Ali Khan said Jammu and Kashmir remained a disputed territory on the United Nations agenda, adding that relevant UN Security Council resolutions provided for the right of the Kashmiri people to determine their future through a free and impartial plebiscite. He said unilateral changes to the constitutional status of the territory had not been accepted by the Kashmiri people.
He said the right to self-determination was a fundamental human, legal and moral right recognized under international law. He added that the resolutions adopted by the elected assembly reflected the aspirations of the people of the territory.
The DBA Mirpur president said the legal fraternity had always stood for the rule of law,  supremacy of the Statehoid,  judicial independence and protection of human rights.
He said the District Bar Association Mirpur would continue its moral and legal support for the peaceful constitutional struggle of the Kashmiri people, while calling upon the United Nations, international community, legal organizations and human rights bodies to play their role in promoting the need of an early  peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute and addressing the increased  human rights violations in IIOJK, he concluded.
