Islamabad: While India celebrates National Women’s Day every year on February 13, the grim reality remains that women in the country continue to face relentless violence and abuse on a daily basis.
According to the report, India records one rape every 16 minutes, while a woman is gang-raped every 30 hours. The country’s capital, Delhi, has earned the infamous title of the “rape capital of the world,” with countless cases going unreported due to societal stigma and systemic failures.
The report further said women are usually considered second-class citizens in India, with New Delhi ranking among the most dangerous cities for women. It lamented that crimes against women have been on the rise in India. “Indian military employs rape as a weapon of war in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir”.
The report further underscores that women in India are often treated as second-class citizens, with New Delhi ranking among the most dangerous cities for women.
The report also sheds light on the Indian military’s use of rape as a weapon of war in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), a brutal practice aimed at suppressing the Kasmiris’ struggle for UN-recognized right to self-determination.
Since January 1989, Indian troops have subjected 11,265 Kashmiri women to mass rape and molestation in the occupied territory. Over the same period, 22,980 women have been widowed due to the oppressive actions of the occupying forces. Many Kashmiri women are forced to live as “half-widows,” with their husbands forcibly disappeared by Indian troops.
Hurriyat leaders and human rights defenders have condemned India’s celebration of “National Women’s Day,” arguing that the appalling condition of women in India, particularly in IIOJK, makes such observances hypocritical. The world is well aware of the severe suffering endured by women in India and IIOJK.
In a statement, All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) spokesperson Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas emphasized that India is weaponizing the rape of women in IIOJK, using it as a tool of war. He pointed out that with over one million Indian troops deployed in the occupied territory, the lives of Kashmiri women and children have been turned into a living hell. A report by Kashmir KMS highlights the alarming rise in violence against women in India, presenting an undeniable challenge to the civilized world. The international community must urgently address and take action against the rampant atrocities targeting women in both India and occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
